Acupuncture Oriental Medicine:
The Foundations of Oriental Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a powerful medicine which aids in strengthening the immune system and serves to prevent disease, control pain, restore health and increase both the ability to function and quality of people’s lives. It has evolved as an empirical science and its theories and treatments have been used and refined for over 5,000 years. This system of health care is used extensively by one-quarter of the world’s population. It is popular in Europe and has become increasingly popular in the United States since the 1970's.

Long before the microscope and the knowledge of germs and viruses this ancient medical system relied on observing the total person in relation to their environment including lifestyle, climate, family relationships and more. Observations of how nature expressed itself became the verbiage for medical modalities.

Your Acupuncture Physician describes imbalances with terms like Wind Heat or Cold, Qi stagnation, Liver Wind, Spleen Qi deficiency, Food retention, etc. If your imbalance is of a cold nature we warm it up, if hot cool it down, if stagnated move it etc.

TCM is the fundamental cornerstone and basis for the practice of Oriental Medicine, which includes and is not, limited to Acupuncture, Herbology, Nutrition/ Food Therapy, Manual Bodywork, Martial Arts, and Meditation.

How Does It Work?

Oriental Medicine is based on ancient theories of Qi (energy - pronounced chee as in cheese) and Xue (blood pronounced like shoe). The invisible Qi (energy) is what animates the person. It travels along pathways called channels or meridians.

Meridians correspond to the vital organs such as heart, kidneys and liver but are not the actual organs themselves. When the acupuncturist talks about an imbalance in the spleen or kidney meridian, we are talking about the energy pathways that help that organ function. Yin/Yang describes how the energy changes, moves and flows through the meridians.

Another way to look at it is to see the body’s energy system as a highway. If there has been an accident or a road-block has been put up, the energy can’t travel without taking a detour. This detour may be just an inconvenience or it might lead down the road to poor health or even death. Fixing the roads will lead to better health, increased performance, and a comfortable body free from pain.

Acupuncture regulates this flow of Qi, shunting it to those areas where it is deficient and draining it from those areas where it is in excess. Each body point provides a specific function in the body, regulating the free flow of vital energy for health and well-being.

There are more than 2000 recorded acupuncture points on the body and about 350 acupoints used for the majority of treatments. There are many styles and some physicians have studied subsystems of using acupoints confined to individual body parts like the ears; scalp; hands; feet and tongue which are capable of treating the whole body.

Western allopathic physicians treat a specific illness or a part of the body. The Eastern philosophy of health sees the body as a completely integrated system. The emotions, mental state and physical symptoms can’t be separated. To holistic practitioners it is all about balance.

What Is So Important About Balance?

Life is based on balance. Rest and exercise, work and play, are all examples of things we know should be balanced. When you are tense, upset, ill or injured, some system in your body is out of balance.

Western medicine directly balances the chemistry in the body with pharmaceuticals. In the case of a dis-ease “caused” by germs, Western medicine often seeks to restore the balance by directly attacking the offending organism with some drug that is poison to the “germ”. Sometimes the medication does not differentiate between the offending organism and the host and side effects can occur.

We are constantly bombarded with germs and viruses on a daily basis. Most of the time we are strong enough to repel whatever comes our way. Our bodies have an innate intelligence to keep us healthy. We can assist our immune system by eating organic non-Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, drinking purified water, deep breathing, exercise, getting enough rest, laughing every day and getting preventive or wellness treatments.

Oriental Medicine and Homeopathy directly balances the energy fields in the body, allowing the body to return to balance from within and heal. Restoring the balance eliminates the symptoms and strengthens the body’s own systems to cure the problem without the side effects of pharmaceuticals.
Acupuncture: (Non Needle Techniques are available)

We only use sterile, one time use, disposable, hair fine needles in our Acupuncture treatments.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) and The World Health Organization (WHO) have recognized over 200 conditions TCM could be useful by itself or in combination with other therapies. Our practice is not limited to only those conditions.

According to Florida law "Acupuncture" means a form of primary health care, based on traditional Chinese medical concepts and modern oriental medical techniques, that employs acupuncture diagnosis and treatment, as well as adjunctive therapies and diagnostic techniques, for the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and the prevention of disease.

Acupuncture shall include, but not be limited to, the insertion of acupuncture needles and the application of moxibustion to specific areas of the human body and the use of electro-acupuncture, Qi Gong, oriental massage, herbal therapy, dietary guidelines, and other adjunctive therapies.

For over 5,000 years specific body points have been mapped and empirically proven effective in the treatment of specific disorders.

When the energy pathways (meridians) become out of balance or blocked, sterile hair-thin stainless steel disposable needles are used to stimulate your body's ability to heal.  I will ask you what sensation you feel during the treatment.  Frequently a heaviness, dull ache, soreness, tingling, warmth or shooting sensation can be felt.  This means we have tapped into the “Qi or energy” of the acupoint and the body is returning to balance.

Each acupuncture point has a special purpose. When I insert the needle into a particular point, it tells the body to do something (relieve pain, stop nausea, increase energy, relax the nervous system, calm the breathing, clear phlegm, etc.). The points are chosen according to the person’s ailment, and the combination of points make up a treatment plan for that specific patient. Therefore, each patient receives a specific set of points just for them.

The needles are placed on the body or in the ear from just a few seconds to 10 – 30+ minutes during a treatment. The patient will usually rest with the needles in them. I usually tell my patients, “Snoring is allowed and expected!” After the needles are removed, the patient usually feels relaxed, energized, stronger…and better!

The course of treatments can be from 2-6 sessions in acute care or up to 20 + sessions in the more chronic disorders.  It also depends on the imbalance and your response to the treatments.

Please ask me questions; I will be glad to explain the procedure. However once the needles are in place it is better to just relax, lie still (don’t move about) and enjoy your special quiet time. Try to remain in the same position until the needles are removed.
Good reasons to add Acupuncture and to your health care program:

• Quicken recovery time from injuries workouts, and surgery
• Reduce muscle aches/repetition strain
• Increase range of motion
• Relieve arthritis and other forms of pain
• Assist in preventing illness by boosting the immune system
• Promote relaxation, increased well-being, improved energy, and emotional balance.
• Hormonal balance

Beneficial Side Effects of Acupuncture:

In a study in six clinics in five states, researcher Claire Cassidey, Ph.D., documented the following positive results of acupuncture:

• 76% noted that they felt better most of the time
• 58% stated that they were more focused most of the time
• 71% stated they miss fewer days of work
• 84% said they were seeing their M.D. less often
• 78.9% said they had reduced their use of prescription drugs
• 70.1% of those who had been scheduled for surgery prior to acupuncture said they had avoided surgery
From "Health Vision 2000," Meridians, Vol. 3, No. 2, Tai Sophia Institute.

Possible side effects: Brief, sharp, stinging discomfort and rarely bruising.  If you experience dizziness, nausea, cold sweat, shortness of breath or faintness please inform me right away. Needle shock is normally caused by not eating before a treatment or from anxiety especially on the first treatment. It rarely happens if you are lying down. Please tell me if you’re on anticoagulants including aspirin.

Acupoint injection therapy:

The injection of sterile  herbal preparations, homeopathics, and other nutritional supplements in the form of sterile substances into acupuncture points by means of hypodermic needles but not intravenous therapy to promote, maintain, and restore health; for pain management and palliative care; for acupuncture anesthesia; and to prevent disease.

Possible side effects. Rarely allergic reaction, pain and soreness or bruising at the injection site.

A vacuum is created in little glass jars or cups that look like beta fish bowls. The cups are placed on well muscled areas. Oils or liniments may be used to lubricate the skin. The vacuum forms a reverse massage by pulling the skin up into the cup and usually feels really good during the treatment. Sometimes the cups are left in place or the physician may move the cups around the area being treated. . It is normally used to avert a cold or flu, respiratory illness, muscle aches and pains, or neck ache after a trauma or stress.

Possible side effects include hickey or bruise like marks. Rarely some soreness may be felt in the area. Frequently the skin remains slightly raised for several minutes or hours where stationary cups were used. As with all massage many toxins are released during the treatment and you need to drink at least half your weight in ounces of water over the next 24 hours.

Electro-Stim Microcurrent, TENS:

Modern electronic instrument is used on the body and ear and provide the proper stimulation, with or without applying acupuncture needles. The treatment is extremely gentle.  You will probably feel nothing at all or sometimes a slight sensation of tingling or warmth, when the machine is in use.

Sometimes when treating the ear patients have reported feeling a sensation in the corresponding part of the body being treated.  I like it when that happens.

From Wikipedia,
A microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulator or MENS (also microamperage electrical neuromuscular stimulator) is a device used to send weak electrical signals into the body. Such devices apply extremely small (less than 1 milliampere) electrical currents to nerves using electrodes placed on the skin. One microampere is 1 millionth of an ampere.

MENS uses include treatments for age-related macular degeneration, wound healing, tendon repair, and ruptured ligament recovery. Since most of the treatments concentrate on speeding healing and recovery, the largest current use is for professional athletes.

A study by a neuroretinologist in the late 80s suggested that microcurrent stimulation of acupuncture points for the eye had positive effects in slowing and even stopping progression of macular degeneration [citation needed]. This treatment is used to treat both the Wet and Dry forms of AMD. This study was based on Ngok Cheng's research on the increased amounts of ATP levels in living tissue after being stimulated with microcurrent.[1] Several similar studies are currently underway. Many companies manufacture such devices for both professional and personal use.
Herbs - Chinese and Western:

Thousands of years of empirical observation and clinical trial and error have been conducted on Chinese herbs to find the right blend and dosage for health.

Chinese Herbal formulas are made from plant, animal and mineral substances. Many herbs are used together to help reduce toxicity of herbs if there are any, to guide the herbs to the proper organ system and restore balance. When used properly they are very safe and have far fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals. Unlike synthetic drugs living plants, minerals and animals mutate just like germs and viruses do. It is the balance of nature. That is why herbal formulas and homeopathics will continue to work when synthetic drugs including antibiotics are no longer effective.

Chinese herbal therapies when prescribed correctly can help resolve everything from chronic pain, infertility, degenerative dis-eases and even migraine headaches. We strongly recommend working with a trained physician when using Chinese herbs as diagnosis, treatment and the understanding of potential interactions require a highly trained professional.

With many large-chain drugstores, grocery stores, discount stores, and multilevel marketers selling supplements, herbs, and vitamins, it is not surprising that the consumer can become easily confused.  In an effort to assist you in using herbs in a way that is helpful and not harmful, please note: When placed on Western Pharmaceuticals, homeopathics or herbal formulas from a qualified physician, you should NOT attempt to self medicate with any other substances. Harmful interactions can be the result.

Just because a label says something is natural does not mean it has no toxicity. Used incorrectly or in combination with other substances the effects can be increased, decreased or altered to produce adverse reactions including death.

Make sure all of your practitioners know everything you are taking. If something changes you have to tell everyone involved for your own safety.

If you choose to go to a multi-level or online salesperson make sure they will discuss with you any possible interactions with your other medications. YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT. It is unwise to buy Chinese Herbs online without checking the background of the company first. There are many counterfeit companies out there and some are putting toxic ingredients in the package. Dr. Solara only buys from reputable companies approved via her professional organizations.

Surfing the net for herbal remedies can be a maze. Some companies are trying to make a quick buck. Some supplements in the health food stores and online do not contain what is printed on the label. The FDA does monitor this and sends out alerts.

All of our herb sources are carefully chosen for their high quality and reputation in the field.  Their quality assurance protocols check for heavy metal contaminants, drug adulterants, and microbial contaminants.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is a powerful method of healing and encourages healing by working with your own innate healing spirit, and has fewer side effects the drugs. It’s more gradual than Western Pharmaceuticals, which is designed to force the body to react in a certain way.

Western Herbal Therapies

One difference between the use of Western and Chinese herbs is the number of herbs used. Chinese formulas have a minimum of two and normally many more herbs blended together. Westerners many times prefer to use a single herb such as saw palmetto to promote prostate health. There are Western formulas as well.

In general, Western herbal therapies are used to improve immune function, and decrease symptoms of a specific health condition.

Possible side effects: allergies up to an including anaphylactic shock.

Infrared Heat Lamps:

Infrared heat lamps are used to warm the skin, relax the muscles and improve function.  If the heat becomes too intense please tell us so we can adjust the distance.  You are supposed to feel like you are SITTING by a roasting fire NOT being roasted by the fire. Possible side effects are mild redness to the skin.  If your skin burns easily, is thin or tears easily please let me know. Some people have reported being burned. That has never happened in my practice.

Infrared High Frequency

The high frequency electrotherapy device is an important pain/beauty instrument. It is through the glass electrode tube to produce high frequency current, and apply to the skin, thus achieves the treatment result.
- It helps to calm nerves and has analgesic function.
- Anti-aging, anti-wrinkle and skin-tightening, pores are minimized.
- Improving secretion. the PH value causes the skin to lean towards neutrality.
- Accelerate blood circulation and improve metabolism.
- Producing the ozone for sterilization.  It can help wounds to heal faster, and reduce inflammation.

Manaka Diode and Hammer:

A wooden dowel (Diode) is placed on acupoints and gently hit with a wooden hammer in rhythm to a metronome. The speed of the metronome is changed for each of the 14 meridians in the body. This modality is great for relieving pain, and stimulating acupoints without penetrating the skin. No known side effects unless you hate the ticktock nois. Most find it relaxing!

Moxibustion also called Moxa:

Artemesia Vulgaris (Mugwort) an herb is formed into little cones or placed in stick form.  The aromatic herb is burned over acupuncture points.  Some people say it smells like sage or marijuana. It can be a strong aroma. If you have breathing difficulties or allergies please speak up. Smokeless moxa sticks and sprays are available. A warm gentle sensation is normally felt when applied properly.  Don’t be macho just to see how hot we can make it. Contrary to some beliefs hotter temperatures don’t always mean greater therapeutic values.

Possible side effects: Mild redness in the area.  The aroma of the herb can sometimes be smelled on your clothing. Some people have reported being burned. That has never happened in my practice.
Qi Gong:

Qi Gong means the Chinese system of energy cultivation which uses posture, movement, exercises, breathing, meditation, visualization, and conscious intent to move, cleanse, or purify Qi, to promote, maintain and restore health and to prevent disease.

Possible side effects: None known
Color Therapy, Cold Laser, LED

Cold Laser

Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers produce coherent light. The term laser bio-stimulation refers to the use of low level laser to irradiate local acupoints on the skin. This procedure is used for the reduction of pain, acceleration of wound healing, non-surgical facelift and acupuncture.

4 Distinct Effects

1) Growth factor response within cells and tissues.
2) Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin and serotonin release.
3) Increased lymphatic activity and strengthening of the immune system response.
4) Stimulation of acupuncture points, increased collagen and ATP production, increased circulation.

Treatment is non-destructive, safe, and painless. The more you use it, the more effective the results.

Cold Level Laser Uses

This safe, non-invasive, and highly effective low level laser devices has been used for Anti-aging, acne, eczema, rosacea, skin ulceration, dermatitis, cuts, bruises, soft-tissue damage, sport injuries, arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders, scars and stretch marks, general facial rejuvenation, sun spots and more. There are many other conditions treated with laser therapy.

Color Therapy:

Color light rays have influenced our mood, action and state of health since the existence of mankind. Sunlight, which contains all the wavelengths, consists of the entire electromagnetic spectrum that we depend on to exist on this planet.  In the medieval cathedrals the beautiful glass-stained windows filtered the sunlight into a healing rainbow spectrum. Many people today still desire to pray in that light for it’s healing and calming qualities.

The idea is based on the fact that color has a certain vibrational frequency that has its effect on our human system and thus activates balance and healing.  Light registered through our eyes and absorbed by skin, triggers hormone production, which influences our entire complex biochemical system.

Some well known modern medical uses of light can be found in a variety of disorders from the use of “bili lights” on jaundiced newborns to the use of full spectrum white light for the depression called Seasonal Affective disorders.

Patients find color to be gentle, non-invasive and relaxing.  Acu-light Colorpuncture Involves focusing colored light on acupuncture points on the skin to restore cells to an even level of balance and to stimulate the healing processes.

Because colors can have a positive and negative effect, specific colors and accurate amounts of color are critical in healing. Studies conducted in the prison system in the 1970’s revealed that 15 minutes of Baker Miller Pink had an immediate calming effect on agitated prisoners. However, after extended use of the color the agitation returned. Pink is still in the red spectrum is a hot positive color with a strong magnetic force. It symbolizes love, anger and life itself. We now know that blues and greens have an extended calming effect.

It is a natural process to shut down our “Energy Anatomy” when we go through traumas like childhood abuse, unshed tears, thwarted self-expression, repressed anger, relationship breakdowns, etc this blocks the energy flow of the meridians. Stuffing this energy can eventually lead to dis-ease.

Color treatment allows us to process the original situation in a new way so we can integrate, heal, resolve and release it.

Colored light, properly applied to the body, not only supplies the necessary bio photon information to the cells, it also facilitates the exchange of information between the subconscious, conscious and super conscious mind gently releasing the energetic residue of traumas.

Solara offers color therapy through the use of lights with gels, minerals, LED, and Cold Laser. Often it is combined with micro-current.

Acu-light Color Benefits:

• Relieve pain, tonify or strengthen specific organs. Increase vitality.
• Balance and De-stress the nervous system.
• Insight into emotions and energetics behind physical conditions.
• Enhances creativity, intuition, and interconnectedness.
• Detoxifies the body resulting in a reduction of allergies and hypersensitivity.

How it works:

As an Acupuncture Physician Solara has studied the vibrational energetic system of the body/mind extensively.
She uses a system called HIGS, a heart-intelligence guidance system. The wisdom of our heart (or heart-intelligence) has a connection to our higher self or guidance. She combines this with a method of pulse reading, developed in France by acupuncturist Dr. Paul Nogier.

Your pulse tells her where to shine the light and what exact color to use. It is a little bit like muscle testing or a dowsing system. With Applied Kinesiology, the more questions you ask of the client, the more the muscle system is likely to become fatigued with possible poor results.

With HIGS she is reading the client response directly, and not influenced through the practitioner's own "filtered dowsing response". Hence there is less possibility for error or for the unconscious preferences of the practitioner to influence the readout.

Possible side effects: Deep relaxation (grin). Red color can increase blood pressure so make sure Solara knows if you have hypertension.

LED Phototherapy

LED and incandescent sources produce incoherent light. LEDs offer a totally natural, non-ablative method for skin rejuvenation. The light from the LEDs interacts with cells and stimulates them to produce new collagen and elastin. Studies confirm that the same LED energy can be used to inhibit collagen formation, which can be helpful in the treatment of scars. By manipulating the wavelengths, cells can be turned on and off.

Solara uses the low power of natural light to deliver a totally natural method of skin rejuvenation. Light and micro-current rejuvenation uses the body's own natural processes to help counteract the effects of aging and to enhance and prolong the effects of skin care products. It helps skin absorb nutrients much faster and more efficiently.

LED is also used for pain relief.

Possible side effects: Deep relaxation (grin).
Homeopathy/Energy/Vibrational Medicine

The physician's highest calling, his only calling, is to make sick people healthy - to heal, as it is termed.
--Samuel Hahnemann

To a Homeopath health is not just the absence of symptoms but also freedom of limitations on all levels: physical, emotional, and mental.

Homeopathy is recognized by the World Health Organization as the second largest therapeutic system in the world. It comes from the Greek word Homios (like) Pathos (suffering). Homeopathic remedies are used for first aid, acute, and chronic forms of dis-ease. Recognizing that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person,

Homeopathy treats the person not the disease. The focus is not on the diseased part or the sickness, but on the reaction by the individual.

Symptoms even if uncomfortable are not the disease but a sign that the body is attempting to restore balance. By strengthening the immune system instead of killing the microbe’s health is restored.

This complete medical system can be used effectively at any age or stage of life and has special value in the treatment of those who are very sensitive to conventional drugs; those who are suffering but have no diagnosis; and women who are pregnant.

In acute dis-ease, a fever, pain, and/or diarrhea are attempts by the vital force or immune system to kill the offending organism and get rid of the toxins. The body is innately designed to restore balance (homeostasis or physis). Sometimes the body gets confused as to the direction of cure and ailments such as arthritis and migraines or hypertension become chronic or long term symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies are like a wake-up call to remind the body, mind and spirit what it is like to be balanced and healthy again. When prescribed appropriately according to “Homeopathic Laws”, they are safe, non-toxic and non-addictive.

Remedies can be taken alongside drugs prescribed by your doctor and will not interfere with their beneficial action. However some drugs may interfere the action of the homeopathic remedy. Make sure we know everything you are taking- pharmaceuticals and self prescribed substances.

As your condition improves, you may be able to safely reduce your conventional medication, thereby avoiding the unwanted effects that sometimes accompany the long- term use of drugs. Homeopathy works - Provided the remedy is correctly chosen no matter what the pathogenic causation may be.

"It is the life-force which cures diseases because a dead man needs no more medicines."   Samuel Hahnemann

The Father of Modern Homeopathy

Homeopathy was first mentioned by Hippocrates (462-377 B.C.) Modern Homeopathy traces its roots to late 18th century Germany, to a physician, chemist and linguist named Samuel Hahnemann, MD, (1755-1843).

As an early medical researcher he read in an herbal text that the Cinchona Officinalis tree bark (China) could be used to treat malaria. He took some of the bark tea and observed that a large dose of it gave him malaria-like symptoms. That led him to the notion that a substance can create symptoms as well as relieve them “Like Cures Like”

Dr. Hahnemann’s work was so highly regarded that a monument was erected in his honor in Washington D.C. At the base of the statue of Dr. Hahnemann can be found the phrase, “SIMILIA SIMILIBUS CURENTUR” – or “Likes are cured by likes.” This is a reference to Dr. Hahnemann’s discovery of the Law of Similars.
Homeopathic Laws

Homeopathy is based on the Law of Similars. “Like Cures Like”. This law states that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to cure those symptoms in an ill person.

People have observed since Hippocrates’ times that a substance, which causes an illness or a symptom in healthy people, can, in very small doses, elicit a healing response in someone presenting with a similar disease.

For instance, microscopic amounts of caffeine (or Coffea cruda) are used to help overcome insomnia especially if it is combined with over joy like going to Disney or a special event. Red onion (Allium cepa) is used for colds and allergies with bland eye tears and a burning nasal discharge. Yet our medicine is so specific that if the symptoms were reversed with burning tears and bland nasal discharge the remedy would be Euphrasia (Eyebright).

That is why we ask so many detailed questions. We need the whole picture to get the correct remedy to alleviate your symptoms. Open communication to help me understand you and your individual reaction to your environment, your past and family history and your mental make up, how you are when you are well and what changed when you became ill is vital to determining the correct remedy for you!

Homeopaths look to Hering’s Law of Cure to see movement towards balance. A shift in symptoms from head to toe (a rash moving down the body). A shift from deeper parts of the body to the surface (asthma changing to eczema); Old symptoms start to appear in reverse order. This is the equivalent of the body having a spring cleaning, clearing out old symptoms that have previously been suppressed.

Law of Minimum Dose. Giving the body more medicine than it needs will not improve or speed up the action of the medicine, if anything it may stop the medicine from being effective.

Even if told to take it three times a day, ONCE clear signs of improvement are obvious, Watch and Wait. No further doses of the remedy need to be taken unless a relapse should occur.

If the symptoms change significantly call me immediately. If in any doubt, WAIT.

This is how we learn how substances can have a curative effect. For over two hundred years homeopathic remedies have been tested on humans in what is called a proving. Healthy individuals are given the original substance until a reaction occurs. Then a diary is kept of all the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual symptoms that are experienced. The diaries are then organized and published into a remedy picture in a Materia Medica. The individual symptoms are recorded and published in a Repertory. When matched precisely to the symptom picture of the patient, health is restored.

“The highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent, in the shortest, most reliable and most harmless way, on easily comprehensible principles.”
Samuel Hahnemann, Organon of Medicine

Homeopathic treatment:

Homeopathy does not necessarily care what the Western allopathic diagnosis is because we do not treat a dis-ease. We treat individuals expressing symptoms which may be labeled a dis-ease based on lab work or other tests. However, when given homeopathic treatment we can observe lab work changes as health is restored.

Homeopathy is especially effective when Western doctors can find no cause for the ailment. Sometimes they say it is all in your head. As a homeopath that is great news as we desire to get into your head and body and discover what is unique to you as an individual and your expression of symptoms.

Identifying the effective homeopathic medicine for an individual patient can be challenging. It may take more than one remedy to produce the desired results. Give your body time to re-create health.

Reactions to homeopathic medicines vary with the individual from subtle to marked. Some experience clear improvement in symptoms very early on. Others find that their symptoms get worse before improving (this is known as an aggravation). Still others find that their general sense of well-being increases, but the symptoms that they wanted cured stay the same. These are very good signs as it shows the remedy is working at the most fundamental level and removing dis-ease. Eventually the original symptoms will disappear.

Solara has been trained in classical homeopathy which means one remedy at a time is normally prescribed. The goal is to peel off the layers to create wellness. The results of successful homeopathic treatment are often outstanding.

How are the Homeopathic Remedies Made?

Homeopathic remedies and pharmacies are regulated by the FDA. Remedies can be prepared from plant, mineral, animal or etheric substances are “vibrational” not chemical. Through a number of serial-dilutions and succussion (hard tapping) the original substance is transformed into a truly a vibrational "Energy" medicine.
For example one drop of the original substance is mixed with 99 drops of water or alcohol and then succussed (tapped hard on a palm or other hard surface. Some people use the Bible). Then one drop of that mixture is mixed with 99 drops of water or alcohol and succussed again. This process is called potenization. X potencies are to the tenth power (9 + 1 = 10) and C (centesimal) potencies are 100th power (99+1 =100.)

When potentized to 12C there are no more molecules of the original substance left in the diluted mixture. Yet if it was measured the mixture would resonate with the same vibrational rate as the original substance. Thus there can be no allergic reactions.

The dilution and succussion are both needed to impregnate the vibration because if done alone there is no resonance. If not succussed it is only diluted and not homeopathic. Even if made according to homeopathic potenization, IF it is not prescribed according to Homeopathic Laws it is still NOT Homeopathic!

Remedies are extremely powerful medicines laced on sugar pellets or in water and or alcohol designed to restore balance on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual plane. Being on your constitutional remedy is the best ounce of prevention for becoming ill.  The remedies also come in injectable form.

Are Homeopathic Remedies Safe?

Homeopathic medicines are recognized and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and are listed in the Homeopathic pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS). All homeopathic medicines are prepared following the highest quality standards and are manufactured by established pharmaceutical companies under strict guidelines.

Homeopathic Remedies promote the body’s natural ability to heal. When prescribed appropriately according to Homeopathic Laws, they are safe, non-toxic and non-addictive.

Homeopathic remedies can be taken alongside drugs prescribed by your doctor and will not interfere with the drugs; however some drugs will interfere with the action of homeopathic remedies.  As your condition improves, you may be able to safely reduce your conventional medication, thereby avoiding the unwanted effects that sometimes accompany the long- term use of drugs.

Newborns, Pregnant Women, and even those over 100 years old can safely take homeopathic remedies.

You should always consult with your doctor before making changes to your conventional medication.
How to Take the Remedies:

You could take one pellet or a whole bottle at one time and IT WOULD BE ONE DOSE. It is the REPETITION of a remedy dose that rules the STRENGTH of its action. Homeopathic medicines are delicate and need careful handling.

Handle the bottle as little as possible. Keep them away from light, heat, magnets strong aromas like perfumes, essential oils and electronics.

Solara normally uses wet dose prescribing. Hit the container on your palm hard a few times (as instructed on the label) then:

From Dropper bottles take up to 1/2 dropperful (10 drops) and put directly under the tongue without touching the mouth with the dropper or put in an ounce of purified water and stir vigorously. If it does touch your mouth or other objects: Remove the rubber and plastic parts from the dropper and put the glass part in boiling water for five minutes and when cooled put back together. Then you can put it in the dropper bottle again. This will prevent contamination of the remedy by bacteria from the mouth (or the floor).

If from pellets in a tube tap the bottle hard on your palm then Shake one pill into the lid of the bottle and put it directly into your mouth allowing it to dissolve under the tongue. Do not put any pills that you have touched back into the bottle. You can also dissolve the remedies or put liquid remedies in purified water and stir vigorously.

Hold the water or pill in your mouth for a minute, but DO NOT swallow the pill down with water, tea or coffee.

If possible the dose should be taken at least fifteen minutes before or after having anything to eat or drink, cleaning your teeth or smoking. This does not mean that you have to take your remedies around meal time. It means we are separating taking the remedy from anything other than water placed in the mouth i.e.: food, flavored drinks, cigarettes, cigars, toothpaste, candy, mints, etc.

Less is more in homeopathy once you start to feel better taper off the remedy. Even if told to take it three times a day, ONCE clear signs of improvement are obvious, Watch and Wait. No further doses of the remedy need to be taken unless a relapse should occur. The remedy effects will continue to work allowing your vital force to rebalance after you stop taking the remedy.

As long as the remedy is working we don't have to. If the body is restoring balance and we keep nagging it by taking more of the remedy, the body may rebel and stop its curative response. No one likes to be told over and over again to do something and like a child may put you on ignore.

If the symptoms change significantly call me immediately. If in any doubt of the significance of changes, WAIT.

When on a remedy prescribed by Dr. Solara please do not treat yourself with over the counter herbs or other homeopathic remedies. These can interfere with your treatment and stop your progression to health.

I don't usually change your diet just because I gave you a remedy. However please be aware that sometimes coffee, mints, camphor and other aroma-therapies can block or antidote the remedy. If I am not getting the results I expect then I may ask you to avoid these substances.

Please do not store your remedies in direct sunlight, around electronics including cell phones and clocks, in the refrigerator or around strong aromas and they can change the vibrational frequency of the remedy.

History of Homeopathy in America

In 1900, 25% of American physicians were homeopaths, there were over 100 homeopathic hospitals, over 20 homeopathic medical schools, and 1000 homeopathic pharmacies.

Widespread throughout Europe, Great Britain, Central and South America, India, and Africa, homeopathy is making a comeback in America. Currently there is a trend to restore the more natural therapies that were main stream before the Industrial Revolution and the introduction of synthetic medications.

Homeopathic Research

Numerous surveys over the past 150 plus years have confirmed that people who seek homeopathic treatment tend to be considerably more educated than those who don't (1). What is not as well known is the fact that homeopathic medicine is the leading "alternative" treatment used by physicians in Europe...and growing numbers of the citizenry.

And despite homeopathy's impressive popularity in Europe, it is actually even more popular in India where over 100 million people depend solely on this form of medical care (2). Further, according to an A.C. Neilsen survey in India, 62 percent of current homeopathy users have never tried conventional medicines and 82 percent of homeopathy users would not switch to conventional treatments (3).

The Evidence IS There

The fact that homeopathy became extremely popular during the 19th century primarily because of its impressive successes in treating the infectious disease epidemics that raged during that time is a fact that is totally ignored by skeptics. (3)(4)(5) It is highly unlikely that a placebo response is the explanation for homeopathy's notable successes in treating epidemics of cholera, yellow fever, scarlet fever, typhoid, pneumonia, or influenza.

Skeptics are wonderfully clever in trying to make up stories and excuses for the good and often amazing results that people get from homeopathic medicines. Most often, however, they simply say that "old news is no news," as they brag about not learning from the past as though this is a good thing.

There are more than 150 placebo controlled clinical studies, most of which have shown positive results, either compared with a placebo or compared with a conventional drug.(6-10)

If that were not enough, studies testing the effects of homeopathic medicines on cell cultures, plants, animals, physics experiments, and chemistry trials have shown statistically significant effects. (11-16) Needless to say, the placebo effect in these basic science studies is virtually non-existent, while the effects from homeopathic doses are significant and sometimes substantial. As it becomes more popular many groups are doing their best to undermine your choice in holistic health care. Quack busters is one group. Comprised of M.D.’s with the purpose of denouncing all alternative modalities. In 2002 their hand was slapped for filing frivolous lawsuits against homeopathic pharmacies and other holistic practitioners. Under disclosure laws we have learned more about the person behind the lawsuits. Read about it here.

Aromatherapy uses plants to effect changes and thereby heal our bodies. Aromatherapy utilizes volatile liquid plant materials, including essential oils and other aromatic compounds of plants, to relax our bodies or stimulate its function, especially our senses.

Essential oils are very aromatic, their healing actions are quite physiological. For example, they can stimulate the limbic system and emotional centers of the brain, activate thermal receptors on the skin, act as natural antibiotics and fungicides, and possibly enhance the immune response in other ways not fully understood. DO NOT USE without permission if on a constitutional homeopathic remedy.

Bach flower essences:

In the 1930’s Edward Bach, a British bacteriologist and homeopath, developed a line of plant essences that he claimed would remedy negative emotional states, along with a system of matching a specific essence to a specific problem. Perhaps the most famous among these is a formulation called Rescue Remedy for stressful situations. Flower essences do not contain any of the actual molecular structure of the original plant but rather embody the very “spirit” of the healing qualities of the plant.
Dripped in Gems Sacred Stone Therapy©

Solara created this system in the early 1980’s and has taught fun shops around the USA. Sessions are experienced as a sacred ceremony in which you are bathed in the energies of minerals, colors, aromas, and sound. Your energy systems are cleansed and rejuvenated in this “Rainbow Journey” while you relax and release. This is a multidimensional healing system.

You lie down inside a geometric crystal layout creating intricate patterns or mandalas on the energy points.  These sacred geometric grids create pillars of light opening the body to multi-dimensional awareness and understanding. If guided to she may also incorporate acupuncture to achieve the desired results.

After a session, there may be a physical detoxification process that can continue for a few hours or day. Drink lots of water. Honor your feelings: If you need to rest, scream, cry, giggle or hug a tree allow it. The changes are always positive and are usually gentle.

Doctor Solara has studied with many different healers and shamans since the 1970’s and went to medical school to become a Homeopath and Acupuncture Physician.  In the 1980’s –90’s she attended workshops with Marcel Vogel, Katrina Raphaell, Randall Baer, Melody, Uma Silby, Ola, Grandpa Wallace Black Elk, Sun Bear, Louise Hay, Jonathan Goldman, Kay Mora and many others.

She is also trained in clinical hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP, Medical Qi Gong, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and other modalities. There are many modalities to help create balance in the Body/Mind/Spirit.

In 1982 Solara began teaching fun shops throughout the USA. She was guided to develop the laying on of stones healing system called “Dripped In Gems Sacred Stone Therapy”© Ask about the certification program.

I would consider it a sacred honor to assist you in discovering who you really are.

Possible side effects: Grounding may be needed after deep relaxation. No known long term side effects have ever been reported.
Massage (Asian), Acupressure, Guasha, Hot Stone, Reflexology, Shiatsu and Tui Na:

Oriental Massage focuses on the meridian flows and acupressure points using the same theory of energy flow as Acupuncture. Full body routines are available. This therapy can be deep or light touch massage. Many toxins can be released with this technique.  Areas may feel tender as trigger points of tension and stress are released.

Literally translates into sand scraping. A tool such as the edge of a ceramic soup spoon or buffalo scraper is used in sweeping motions over the back, arms or legs.  It is a great mover of Qi and blood.  You should feel wonderful and no pain during the treatment.

Possible side effects include red marks, which vary in color from light red to black or purple in areas where the most stagnation occurred.  Some soreness or tenderness may be felt in the area but drinking lots of water should help clear the rest of the toxins out.

Occasionally the marks can be very large (especially weeks and months after trauma such as a car accident where there is lots of stagnation) and someone could joke that you look like you were beat up, you were not. Again the color will only come up if there is stagnation in the area. Otherwise no marks will be seen.  There will be no damage to the skin. I might follow with a analgesic cream.

Hand/ Foot Reflexology -

Working the reflexes on the feet that correspond to all the organs and glands in the body..

Hot Stone Massage

Used for centuries by Asians, Native Americans and many cultures this technique creates deep relaxation as you journey into a tranquil garden.

Shiatsu -

Japanese acupressure massage. Using gentle but firm finger pressure instead of needles to correct energy imbalances to relieve muscular tension. Can be performed with the hands or the feet.

Tui Na Asian Massage
Tui Na is the traditional system of Chinese style physical therapy or massage similar to Chiropractic manipulations. Oriental Massage focuses on the meridian flows and acupressure points using the same theory of energy flow as Acupuncture. It may be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance treatments in a variety of muscular-skeletal conditions.

Drink Lots of water after all massage therapy unless contraindicated.

Possible side effects: Soreness from deep tissue massage. Drinking more water should help with this.

Tensegrity (Cranial/Sacral/Polarity/Structural Re-Alignment),

This is an incredible technique to release stuck patterns and tension in the muscles, restore circulation to the brain and structurally re-create balance.

"The word 'Tensegrity' is an invention: a contraction of 'tensional integrity.' Tensegrity describes a structural-relationship principle in which structural shape is guaranteed by the finitely closed, comprehensively continuous, tensional behaviors of the system and not by the discontinuous and exclusively local compression member behaviors. Tensegrity provides the ability to yield increasingly without ultimately breaking or coming asunder" - Richard Buckminster Fuller (excerpt from Synergetics, p. 372.)
Medical Esthetics, Cosmetic Acupuncture, Beauty Care

The skin is our largest organ and reflects the state of our internal health. It is the only organ that we have to take care of from both the inside and outside. In Chinese Medicine, the state of physical health, emotions, and spirit is reflected on the skin, particularly on the skin of the face. You look your best when your healthy inside reflects on your face!Cosmetic acupuncture naturally increases your body's production of collagen and elastin, resulting in smoother, wrinkle free skin.

Successful results rely on a personal commitment of two treatments a week for a minimum of 5 weeks.
Many factors contribute to the visible signs of aging, including sun damage, smoking, stress, diet and lifestyle.

Today, face lifts, brow lifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, various modes of injectible therapy, like Botox or Restalyne, and "non-invasive" procedures, like micro-dermabrasion, are being used to create a youthful appearance. These procedures only address the "outside", can be expensive, and can carry significant risks.  Cosmetic Acupuncture works on both.

Mental Emotional Therapies

EFT® stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques®. EFT is a meridian based energy shifting and re-balancing technique. The EFT process is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine's energy system. Over 5000 years ago, the Chinese mapped out the subtle energies that move throughout the body. The EFT process is similar to acupuncture except the meridian points on the body are stimulated by tapping with the fingertips instead of using needles.

Gary Craig, the creator of the Emotional Freedom Techniques, states in his EFT Manual, “EFT is based on the discovery that imbalances in the body’s energy system have profound effects on one’s personal psychology. Correcting these imbalances, which is done by tapping on certain body location, often leads to rapid remedies.”

EFT helps release and shifts the energy imbalances that we have acquired throughout our lifetime.

Our energy systems become disrupted and imbalanced by strong negative emotions, traumas and unresolved issues that leave lasting impressions on our energy systems. Excessive fear, anxiety and stress also disrupt our energy systems.

EFT works exceedingly well to release the negative emotions left over from past memories. The technique also can be used to instill beliefs that support us in moving forward and typically incorporate a combination of releasing negative feelings or emotions, as well as, instilling or activating positive feelings or behaviors.

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) Psychoneurondocrineimmunology (PNEI)

Relaxation, meditation, and imagery exercises that can enhance immune system activity. Getting to the root cause of imbalances and clearing the matrix is important especially when everything else you have tried has failed. This can help restore well-being on all levels and is especially effective for stress management, peri-menopause, Cancer and many other dis-eases.
Nutritional Therapies/ Orthomolecular Medicine

Lifestyle and Food Therapy:

Dietary guidelines include nutritional counseling based on Oriental Medicine Dietary Principles and as used in the administration, prescription, and/or recommendation of nutritional supplements to promote, maintain, and restore health and to prevent disease.

Dr. Solara has studied with many people about the value of proper nutrition and has recipes to help with a variety of conditions.

"You are what you eat" is a translation of the French phrase "Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es." [Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are], written by French doctor Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, in his book "Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante, 1826"

"Ninety per cent of the diseases known to man are caused by cheap foodstuffs. You are what you eat."

In 1942, Lindlahr published You Are What You Eat: how to win and keep health with diet. That seems to be the vehicle that took the phrase into the public consciousness. Lindlahr is likely to have also used the term in his radio talks in the late 1930s (now lost unfortunately), which would also have reached a large audience.

You are what you eat - Adelle Davis The phrase got a new lease of life in the 1960s hippy era. The food of choice of the champions of this notion was macrobiotic wholefood and the phrase was adopted by them as a slogan for healthy eating.

By the 1990's the food game became more serious. The amount of pesticides, fertilizers, petroleum products, genetically modified organisms, viruses and toxins in the food we eat have never been higher. The incidence of Cancer, Heart Disease, Digestive problems, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Memory problems and degenerative disease are increasing at alarming rates. Eating organic, non-GMO food has never been more important than now.
